Legal Counsel Job Description
If businesses are not aware of the legal ramifications of their actions, they are vulnerable to fraud, mismanagement or other penalties that result from noncompliance to government laws. To protect against this risk, companies hire legal counsels, or lawyers, who provide legal services and advice on a variety of different issues. These professionals also act as advocates for companies in court cases.
Function
Legal counsels research local, state and federal laws that pertain to their companys business, whether education, financial services or accounting. Their duties range from developing legal processes that enforce corporate governance to reviewing legal contracts, company publications, real estate leases and business purchases for potential liabilities. In addition, legal counsels submit copyright applications for products, trademarks and services; mediate labor disputes; oversee tax payments; and work closely with other lawyers, legislative bodies and government officials on the legal rights of their client or organization. Legal counsels also gather evidence and legal information for court cases, represent their client in trials and recommend courses of action for business transactions related to stockholders, board directors and the public.
Education
In addition to holding a bachelors degree, legal counsels must complete three years of law school at a university accredited by the American Bar Association. Law students prepare for their career by taking courses in English, philosophy, history, public speaking, political science, economics, contracts, property law and legal writing. Some law schools also provide students with practical experience through mock trials and projects in legal-aid offices. To practice law in a U.S. court, legal counsels must be registered with their states bar.
Skills
Legal counsels must be confident, reliable, responsible and trustworthy. These professionals often deal with confidential legal documents that hold sensitive financial and business information. In addition, legal counsels should be detail-oriented, analytical and creative as they are required to examine and solve a variety of different legal problems using extensive research and logic. Companies look for candidates who possess excellent writing, oral and interpersonal communication skills and who are comfortable presenting in front of small and large groups. Some legal counsels also write internal and external newsletters and messages to keep their organizations informed of legal changes that impact employees, clients and business partners.
Salary
PayScale states that the average salary range for lawyers and attorneys fell between $57,063 and $106,165 in June 2010. Bonuses ranged between $2,043 and $12,119 per year. Salaries vary based on employer size, location and years of experience.
Potential
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), lawyers and attorneys will be in high demand due to an expected increase in legal transactions, criminal trials and civil cases. In addition, companies will need legal services and advice around issues such as employee compensation, bankruptcy, government compliance, health care and antitrust laws. Legal professionals with a degree from a prestigious law school and an outstanding academic record will have the best job prospects. During the 2008 to 2018 decade, positions for lawyers are projected to increase by 13 percent.
