Requirements for Asbestos in Automotive Brakes

Requirements for Asbestos in Automotive Brakes

Some automotive brakes contain asbestos, so federal and state agencies mandate the use of protective equipment and work safety procedures to protect auto shop workers. According to the Oregon Occupational Health and Safety Administration, brake shoes and clutches often contain asbestos. Requirements for asbestos safety in the auto repair field protect employers from mesothelioma lawsuits, since asbestos exposure can cause this illness.

Protective Equipment

Repair workers must wear protective clothing to prevent asbestos exposure when high levels of asbestos are present. According to the Department of Labor, some types of protective equipment include face shields, vented goggles, gloves, and full body protective suits. A respirator may be necessary if the auto shop is servicing a large number of vehicles each day. Special equipment is usually not necessary for auto shops, if the auto shop uses government-approved cleaning methods.

Record Storage

The auto shop must retain a record of each measurement it makes to measure employees' total exposure to asbestos. The record must include the use of protective equipment if it is present, as well as information about the measurement techniques the shop uses and evidence that these techniques are accurate. According to the Department of Labor, the auto shop must keep these records for 30 years, since health problems caused by asbestos often take a long time to appear.

Regulatory Agencies

Many agencies have jurisdiction over asbestos regulation. According to the State University of New York at New Paltz, the federal Occupational Health and Safety Administration and the federal Environmental Protection Agency regulate asbestos exposure. Some states have state versions of these agencies which also regulate asbestos safety in the automotive business. The federal Department of Labor, as well as the applicable state Department of Labor, also establish requirements for asbestos safety.

Time Period

Occupational Health and Safety regulations differ based on the time period in which the brake equipment was manufactured. According to the State University of New York at New Paltz, OSHA compliance for asbestos is mandatory if the auto repair shop is working on vehicles which were built before 1993. Newer vehicles usually don't have asbestos in their brake pads, but equipment purchased from foreign wholesale suppliers may still contain asbestos.

Cleaning Methods

Government regulations specify acceptable cleaning methods in the automotive repair business. According to OSHA, a method safe for high volumes is mandatory when the auto repair ship fixes more than five automotive brakes during the week. Either the low-pressure/wet cleaning method, which requires special low-pressure spray equipment, or the negative enclosure method, which requires the construction of an enclosure, must be used when the auto shop performs higher volumes of work. The wet wipe method, which simply uses a water spray bottle and a cloth, can be used when the auto shop works on less than five automotive brakes each week.
