Alternative Asbestos Control Methods
Asbestos is a material that was widely used in homes and other buildings in the early 20th century. However, during the 1970s, scientists discovered it caused a number of respiratory problems, including lung plaques and cancer. If a building contains asbestos and needs to be demolished, the contaminated material will usually be removed first. However, there are other methods of asbestos disposal that don't require the material to be removed from the building prior to demolition.
Wetting the Asbestos
Spraying water over the asbestos will reduce the amount of harmful fibers that are released into the environment. According to the Health and Safety Executive, using a wetting agent can be useful. You can distribute the water over the asbestos with a roller or brush. However, these tools must be disposed of after use. Be careful not to use a forceful jet of water, which could disturb the asbestos material. Instead, use a light spray.
Earthen Berms
Earthen berms are raised mounds of earth that sit outside exterior walls. These can be used to hold tanks for the used water that has been contaminated by the asbestos material. By protecting the tanks in berms, they will not be damaged during the demolition process and, therefore, pose no risk of contaminating the surroundings.
Air-tight Plastic
Wrapping the asbestos in air-tight plastic contains the harmful microfibers and prevents the local environment from becoming contaminated. According to Tameside Council, asbestos materials should be securely wrapped or double-wrapped in thick, heavy-duty polythene sheeting or bags and then sealed with tape.
