How to Find Bankruptcy Record Filings Online
Bankruptcy records are readily available online for a small fee. The public has access to these records because the documents are in the public domain. In the United States, personal and business bankruptcy cases are handled by federal bankruptcy courts and, in most cases, bankruptcy filings and related records are made available online.
Instructions
- 1
Gather basic information about the bankruptcy case in question. Names of the individual filers or company, Social Security or Taxpayer ID number, date of the bankruptcy filing and the district court where the case was filed will help you locate the records for a particular case when searching online.
2Open a Web browser and navigate to the Public Access to Court Electronic Records website at Pacer.gov. This is a government website. It charges a quarterly fee and requires registration. You can register online or over the telephone by calling 800-676-6856. PACER is a centralized database with links to federal, district and bankruptcy courts across the U.S.
3Browse to the National Archives government website to obtain copies of bankruptcy record filings. The archives provide access to cases filed between 1940 and 1998. The records are located at the National Archives regional offices. The main website at Archives.gov provides links to each regional office and instructions for requesting bankruptcy case records and files.
4Navigate to the Public Record Search Online database. This is not a government website; it is operated by a private firm, and you can use it to conduct searches for bankruptcy record filings and other public records. Registration and payment are required to search the records database.
