How to Find Pro Bono Attorneys

If you need legal help but cannot afford a lawyer, a pro bono attorney might be the answer. Attorneys will occasionally work pro bono, or free, if they have the time and feel the circumstances merit their help. Typically, pro bono cases are reserved for low-income people. Most of the work covers civil matters, such as landlord-tenant, employment rights and domestic issues. However, an attorney can provide pro bono services to anyone and in any type of case. It might take some legwork to locate the right attorney for your case, but knowing you are in good legal hands can make it worth the effort.

Contact the American Bar Association for a list of attorneys who offer pro bono services. The ABA is a national association that sets standards and ethics for law schools and practices. Use its referral service to locate an attorney in the practice area that you need and who might be able to offer you free services. You can also contact the bar association in your particular state, such as the California Bar Association, for help.

Search for and contact attorneys in your city or region and ask if they offer pro bono services. Many attorneys who work at private firms will not advertise their pro bono services, but if they feel the situation warrants it, they might comply and help you out. Contact attorneys that specialize in the practice area of your case. For example, if you feel that you have been unjustly fired, find an employment attorney. Likewise, if you face an eviction, look for an attorney who specializes in landlord-tenant issues. Online legal directories, such as Martindale-Hubbell and FindLaw, can help you to search for lawyers in your city by practice area. The attorneys profiles on such websites may also indicate if they have taken pro bono cases in the past.

Ask an attorney who has recently graduated law school and passed the bar exam. Young lawyers who are just starting out might be more likely to take a case for free since it will give them valuable experience. Search for attorneys who are on their own or part of a small law firm. Young attorneys in large firms probably won't have time for pro bono cases. Read their profiles on their own websites or on legal search sites such as Martindale-Hubbell or FindLaw. The profile should list the year that they graduated law school. While new attorneys are less experienced, they are still qualified to help you. Discuss any concerns you might have with the attorney so that you feel confident about her abilities.

Look into federally funded programs that offer pro bono or volunteer attorneys. For example, the Eviction Defense Collaborative offers free or low-cost legal assistance in landlord-tenant cases. You will be provided with a volunteer attorney should you need to go to a settlement or eviction hearing. Many such agencies exist for various practice areas, such as domestic violence, social security and employment issues.
